Because the house stood in a coveted family-friendly neighborhood, the homeowners were willing to tackle a substantial renovation. With a reworked roofline and new pathway, the remodeled exterior makes a much stronger first impression. The goal for this exterior makeover was to lighten and brighten the facade but stay true to the home's original spirit.

Split Level Home Exterior Remodel

The home now features distinct Cape Cod style, thanks to a new upper floor with dormers, a gable over the front entry, and a main-level bay window that brings symmetry to the entry. With a new baby on the way, the homeowners had an excuse to add on to this one-bedroom 1922 cottage and improve the less-than-friendly exterior. The new addition brought with it an exterior makeover with timeless style. Repeating the sophisticated style of the front entry, a new second-story porch to the left extends the home's gracious exterior details.

Landscaping for Curb Appeal and Future Sales

We share a variety of home remodeling projects, DIY tutorials and budget saving interior design ideas. Upgrading your home’s exterior with modern materials and insulation can improve energy efficiency, helping you save on heating and cooling costs over time. The best way to estimate renovation costs is to talk to a local interior designer, local architect, or remodeling contractor near you. It’s also wise to add 20% extra to your budget to account for unforeseen issues. If your house renovation plans include an addition, changing stairs, or knocking down a load-bearing wall, consult a local structural engineer. Structural engineers cost between $350 to $750 and can ensure your plans are safely and securely completed.

House exterior design: why should you change it?

Most exterior designers have preferred contractors they work with, which means you won’t get to chose your own, more affordable contractors. Replacing porch railings can cost anywhere between $15 and $850 per linear foot, with a national average of $93 per linear foot. Intricately wrought iron railing can sometimes date a house, and this type of railing doesn’t go well with every house style. Even if you’re on a tight budget, it is worth it to hire a contractor to paint your home’s exterior. From both a safety and quality standpoint, professionals will get the job done with ease. Keep in mind that bright sunlight typically isn’t forgiving on uneven paint lines.

Pale Yellow and White

A pale yellow home with white accents is sure to make all who enter, and even those who pass by, smile. For his family’s Florida vacation home, designer Doniphan Moore chose to paint the classic Georgian’s columns in white to contrast with the light yellow walls. A bright white base with seafoam blue accents is a tried-and-true color combination. It’s especially ideal for a waterfront property or beach cottage like this Florida home by designer Ashley Gilbreath as it plays into the coastal environment. Schedule a free consultation to find windows and doors for your home.

Other Home Renovation Cost Factors

The main entry now features an arched, solid-wood door flanked by sidelights that continue its curve. A cut-stone terrace across the front of the house, a rustic flagstone walk, and a low stucco wall that serves as a fence add to the French-country romance. A sophisticated Prairie-style makeover took this split-level from blah to beautiful. Stucco replaced cedar siding and the brickwork below was painted to match.

New steps inlaid with pavers graciously lead guests to a custom mahogany door with leaded-glass sidelights that invite light into the home. Shaker siding in a mossy green color contrasts with the soft white trim. A low brick wall creates a formal separation from the new driveway.

Heat-treated timbers like Accoya have a large initial outlay, but require next to no maintenance, making them a good long-term investment. Subject to planning permission, it may also be possible to add a second storey to a bungalow, transforming it into a house, or to replace a flat roof. Many smaller extensions can be added under permitted development rights (PDRs), without applying for planning permission, especially those at the back and sides of a property. At the lighter end of the scale, you're looking at cosmetic changes like a lick of paint, or cladding. Fences help keep kids and pets safe, but they do so much more for your curb appeal as well.

Replace your home's windows

Low-maintenance vinyl siding in ocean blue contrasts nicely with the wood door and white trim. See how these homes gained style and character with a few exterior upgrades. Architectural enhancements, door and hardware replacements, and fresh exterior colors are all easy ways to up your home's character and curb appeal. Surrounded by rose-filled lanes, historical architecture, and picturesque harbors, this vacation cottage in Nova Scotia has enjoyed scenic views since 1875.

If your home will be undergoing several upgrades, think about the timing and length of each project. You can’t tackle everything at once, and it’s unlikely that professional contractors can either. We partner with property management companies, HOA board members, and multifamily property owners to protect their investments through high-quality roofing. An awkward, enclosed porch, unfinished steps, and out-of-control juniper bushes box off the house from the yard.

Go for an earthy color palette of dark gray-green paired with wood and stone for an exterior that feels grounding. For this Michigan home, Liz Hoekzema selected Rock Bottom by Sherwin-Williams. It works nicely with the walnut, oak, soapstone, and marble materials used outside and inside the house. Other exterior home upgrades like garage doors, landscaping, lighting or changes to your front porch don’t impact the structure of your home and can wait until after everything else is completed. The bigger the exterior house renovation, the more likely you’ll incur an unexpected expense. Surprises both large and small tend to pop up to delay timelines and add to your costs.

There are many reasons why you might want to replace the current exterior finish. Cladding over pebbledash is often done as it is hardwearing and easy to maintain, but it can look quite harsh – especially on boxy estate homes. While many people view a home for its practicality and how it can serve them for family life, the appearance of a home is very important too. Historic homes ooze charm and character that mass-built, post-war homes sometimes lack, and this can be off-putting to potential buyers. So if you are looking for 1960s house facelift ideas, or want to update a 1970s house exterior, you have come to the right place. Never overlook the importance of landscaping when it comes to your home’s exterior.

Boarded up windows, a crumbling front stoop, and a barren yard signaled a cry for help. See what curb appeal tips the homeowners employed to give this home a brand new look. The mix of brick and siding on this builder-grade home exterior didn't help it stand out.

The dark storm doors were removed to reveal the warm wood tones of the double front doors. A clean front walk and a well-kept yard and garden add to the overall curb appeal. Here are 20 before and after exterior remodels that can inspire you when it comes to your own home. During the springtime, many people eagerly head to garden centers and nurseries to buy plants and flowers that will brighten up their yards. It's also a great time to take a look at the exterior of your home and consider an update. Sometimes adding shutters, removing old awnings, or changing the paint color can make a huge difference.

A cream and burnt orange color palette looks especially nice on a Spanish-style home, like the 1926 Los Angeles residence of designer Justina Blakeney. The burnt orange window trim and roofing bring out the warmth in the off-white siding. By evaluating paint colors at different times of day, you’ll get a better sense of whether or not you’ll like them in the long run.

It’s actually a miracle one of the dead trees or limbs never fell and crushed the house. The side yard was also cleared to make room for the 2 car detached garage and second driveway. As you can see below, we removed a lot of dead trees from the front yard and opted to leave two for shade.

Exterior Home Remodel: Tips, Tricks, & Hottest Designs

Whether it's a DIY project or one that requires an experienced contractor, updating the exterior of your home not only gives you a new look to enjoy but can add to the value of your home. Under permitted development rights you can choose and fit replacement windows, alter the shape and size of the window openings, and add new ones without having to get planning permission. However, choose windows and doors for a period property with care if you are planning to maintain its authentic style. Two of the most important factors for a good exterior home remodel are lighting and landscaping. While they may seem like minor details compared to a new roof or repainted exterior, the right lights and greenery can go a long way.

Exterior Home Remodeling and Renovation Ideas

Painting this Pennsylvania home’s brick with a crisp white paint color created a nice contrast against the dark blue siding. The cost of a home renovation can vary depending on the scope of projects the home requires. On average, the exterior of a house will cost between $5,000 to $15,000. You can expect most of these expenses to be spent on painting the exterior, redoing the house’s siding, and basic landscaping expenses. Spending more money on landscaping may be worth it, as curb appeal attracts buyers and can pay off in the long run. Other exterior renovation projects include replacing garage doors or installing fencing on the property.

To help inspire you, we’ve rounded up 40 house exteriors that are admirable in one way or another—or, more likely, many ways. Take notes of the color schemes, ingenious yard designs, and whatever else sparks exclamations of "I love that!" for you to recreate for your own space. Home remodeling costs depend on the square footage, quality of materials, and what areas are renovated. Most remodeling projects add resale value and provide a 50% to 85% return on investment. Then add subtle contrast with a distinct black, as designer Shazalynn Cavin Winfrey did for her Texas home by painting the windows and doors in Jet Black by Benjamin Moore. The former parsonage's terra-cotta details and surrounding greenery complete the inviting scene.

Generally, the cost to remodel a living room is $10 to $60 per square foot. A simple DIY job will likely cost less, while a high-end custom remodel is likely to run you well above $60 per square foot. Here are some examples of common kitchen renovation project types. “It’s always nerve-racking when an original owner comes through,” says Claire O’Connor, one part of the duo behind O’Connor Estates, the company representing the listing. It was especially stressful in this case given the original owner had been there since the property was built in 1950.

Boxed-in porch columns and horizontal siding instead of porch rails hide the potential. The first thing you see on the exterior of this house is the white, evenly spaced columns, which make it appear caged. The original blond-colored brick on the house is dirty and the front retaining walls are overgrown with ivy.

Planters can seriously spruce up your outdoor space and boost your home’s curb appeal. Here are some of our top tips for choosing the perfect outdoor planters for your home. The color of exterior paint is altered by surroundings, roof color, sun exposure, amount of shade, time of day, and weather. Also, in some instances, brick will soak up the pigment in the paint, resulting in a lighter appearance on the house…another reason to paint a section of the actual bricks with your samples.

The only statement this small house makes is that there is too much going on with the three different siding finishes, a faded entry awning, and overgrown shrubs. A cluster of trees is growing so close to the house that the trunks are leaning on it, while the bare concrete steps are crowded with overgrowth. There are several ways to illuminate your property, including lining pathways with lights, using track lighting, or even installing a light above your front door. These tips will ensure your property is visible to guests and visitors at any time of day. To give the beach home a lighter appearance, the exterior was painted a pale yellow with crisp white trim. The porch was transformed into an open-air retreat enclosed only by horizontal white railings. French doors along the back wall of the porch allow more light to enter into the living room. Swinging pressure-treated louvered pine panels painted an olive green camouflage the parking spaces below.

We provided two exterior designs for this commercial property in Virginia, each with different cladding materials and colors. Landscaping is another crucial component of a successful exterior design. Research which plants are native to your area and how the weather will impact them year-round. Just be sure to keep in mind how much time and energy you want to maintain your landscape. Incorporating unique materials like rocks, pine, straw, artificial turf, wood chips, and cement is one way to keep maintenance costs and upkeep low. The timeline of exterior home renovations will vary greatly depending on which projects you aim to complete.

The off-center front door threw off the balance of the otherwise symmetrical facade, and a covered porch spanning the home's front blocked natural light. Striped awnings on the upper windows made the upstairs equally dark and dreary. This classic Victorian rowhouse was in serious need of rescue with its decaying exterior, old windows, and overgrown landscaping. Wait until you see what a fresh paint job and smart window coverings ideas can do. Upgrades such as new siding, a fresh coat of paint, and eye-catching shutters restore the character to this 1885 home. The owners also did some impressive work with the landscaping that took it from overgrown to lush.

Adding square footage costs $85 to $200 per square foot, depending on the room size, materials, location, and if you’re building up or out. Use white paint to highlight shutters, and let the star of the show be the front door painted in a plum color. The deep purple, like on this Berkshires ranch house of designer Annie Selke, has a lasting warmth that’ll make anyone who enters feel welcome. Bold, moody, and versatile, charcoal black will never go out of style. As an exterior paint color, it’s sleek and hides any dirt or debris buildup. For the Wyoming home of Emily Janak, the designer chose a black protective coating to update the previously mint green and white one.

Fencing can help define your property, while adding style and interest. Make the area leading up to your front door just as welcoming and attractive as the rest of your home. Widen the walkway itself, and invest in some new material such as stamped concrete pavers to create a more intricate and detailed path. You can also include built-in seating or conversation areas to increase the versatility of your landscaping and add interest to the area as well. Make sure you include some additional lighting in this area, possibly by including lights low to the ground that can unobtrusively light the path without taking away from its style at night. If you have too few or too small windows on your home’s front, it can detract from its style, while keeping the interior dark as well.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police sergeant was on the task force but was not struck by gunfire, Jennings said. The sergeant called for backup, and that's when the four responding Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were shot, Jennings said. A crane operator spotted two people working on windows and tried to swing a basket over to them to help, but the smoke and fire made the rescue too difficult. Channel 9 has not confirmed that Demonte Sherrill and the other construction worker were those two people. The crane operator, among the 15 people rescued by firefighters, was treated by local EMS for non life-threatening injuries and taken to a hospital, fire officials reported.

Four members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were also shot, one of whom died from his injuries on Monday night, the police said on social media. The officer who died, Joshua Eyer, had been helping other officers arrest the suspect when he was shot, the police said. Eight officers were wounded during the shootout and taken to hospitals. Three were pronounced dead on arrival, and another died from his injuries on Monday night.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting and spoke with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to express his condolences and support for the community. The neighborhood, of one– and two-story, brick homes and small trimmed lawns, is very safe, said Alex Rivera, who lives on a street nearby. Rissa Reign was cleaning her house when she heard the first shots ring out. There was a pause, then a second set of shots and then a third. After the home was cleared, the helicopter pilot said he couldn’t show the front lawn of the home because the scene was too graphic and disturbing. "Your father, your husband, your friend, your neighbor ... and today they're not going home," she said.

Update: 2 workers killed as massive fire destroys SouthPark apartment building under construction

There were many "mayday" situations where firefighter crews were trapped or had issues escaping the blaze, Johnson added. Sáenz was sent video taken close to the scene of the fire. The video shows debris and ash falling as the flames rip through the construction site. At that point, they knew they needed to get everyone out. Workers told Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz many people started yelling “fire” to do what they could to tell everyone to evacuate. But the flames just got too bad and they had to make a run for it themselves.

Fire officials say the fire was extremely fast moving and had temperatures at more than 2,000 degrees. Firefighters also had to deal with several addition spot fires and rooftop fires that were caused by embers. Mayor Vi Lyles named one of the deceased workers as Demonte Sherrill. Jennings said police assisted Charlotte Fire with traffic control, as well as with the evacuation process. CMPD’s flight team also provided firefighters with a bird’s eye view, helping them determine which areas to attack.

We’ve been advised to stay away from the SouthPark area until further notice and residents who live nearby, please stay inside.

CHARLOTTE — A massive fire broke out Thursday morning at an apartment complex under construction in the SouthPark area of Charlotte, killing at least one person. In March 2007, two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were killed while responding to a domestic dispute by someone not directly involved in the fight. Demeatrius Antonio Montgomery is serving a life sentence in the killings of officers Jeffrey Shelton and Sean Clark.

The task force was made up of officers from multiple agencies, who often team up to find and arrest suspects. Those killed included two veteran officers of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott. As they approached the house, Mr. Hughes opened fire, striking several officers, the police said.

Charlotte Fire said CMPD officers helped knock on doors to notify residents about what was happening. "Then firefighters climbed over 100 feet up the crane to help rescue the operator who had begun climbing down," the official added. “The men and women of this department put themselves in harm’s way and actually had to call for assistance themselves to get out of this fire.

Johnson said the mostly wooden-frame apartment building caught fire quickly. But Charlotte Fire Department Chief Reginald Johnson said Friday evening that the remains of two workers had been found in the smoldering wreckage. Johnson said their bodies had been sent to the medical examiner's office for identification. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles identified one as Demonte Sherill, a father of four. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced multiple road closures in the SouthPark area in a tweet after the fire broke out. A spokesperson for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools told WBTV on Thursday morning that schools had not been impacted by the blaze.

One of the task force members, which is made up of federal agents and other officers from across the region, was injured, as well as three other Charlotte-Mecklenburg cops. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Joshua Eyer, who only just was named officer of the month for April, died several hours later at the hospital. The bloodshed — the deadliest day for US law enforcement in a single incident since 2016 — erupted as Marshals approached the home to serve Clark Hughes Jr with a warrant for possessing a firearm. "Mill Creek Residential is adding to its North Carolina presence with the development of Modera SouthPark, a luxury apartment community located in one of Charlotte’s most desirable submarkets," the website reads.

One of the firefighters heard the cries of people trapped on the sixth floor but couldn't see them through the smoke, Johnson said. Construction workers told the Charlotte Fire Department that there are still two construction workers that are unaccounted for. The last marshal shot and killed in the line of duty was in November 2018.

He said he made sure everyone on the crew he leads was together and got out, but was worried for others. The fire moved rapidly because of the amount of exposed wood at the site, the chief said. Charlotte Fire said 90 firefighters responded to the scene. One user on Twitter, @TheHomeT, shared a video of the smoke plume emanating from the fire.

It stands as the backbone that bolsters the performance and success of these strategies. In order to extract maximum benefits from organizational data assets, integration of cloud data management with core business objectives is essential.

Plan Events

By examining your current maturity level, you can pinpoint gaps and lay the groundwork for a more potent and flexible cloud data management system. Cloud computing has fundamentally transformed the landscape of modern businesses. This technology has become the backbone of many organizations, enabling them to achieve remarkable levels of efficiency, scalability, and remote accessibility. It has effectively leveled the playing field, empowering businesses of all sizes to compete on a global scale. Merchant & Trade, Nuvolé Rooftop TwentyTwo, and Fahrenheit all host plenty of date nights and happy hours in uptown, but there’s always room for another rooftop bar in Charlotte.

Fresh Take: Cloud Bar by David Burke, Uptown’s Newest Rooftop Spot

The setup is remarkably conducive to COVID-era dining, too, so Cloud Bar landed in the right place when it opened in August. Storing data in the cloud centralizes it, which significantly enhances accessibility for all teams. This centralization not only simplifies data access but also boosts productivity by facilitating effective collaboration. It allows for real-time data retrieval and informed decision-making, regardless of teams’ geographical locations. Cloud data management provides the flexibility and scalability businesses need to grow.

Food was good but took a very long time to come out. We were told 13 people for our booth when we put deposit down but then told 10 at the door. We paid $1250 for our booth and still had to pay an additional $100 per extra person and it was a free entry night. If I didnt have people with me from out of town, I would have went somewhere else.

Taking the leap to transform your cloud data management practice is a pivotal stepping stone on your business’s path to digital maturity. As we’ve seen, it’s not a simple journey, but a strategic one that requires careful evaluation, ongoing nurturing, and a willingness to evolve with the changing times. Ultimately, the fruits of this commitment can usher in unparalleled efficiency, scalability, and data-driven insights, all of which go hand-in-hand with sustainable business success.

“We want to make it exciting and give people more of a show while they’re eating and drinking,” Boyd said. He acknowledged that Charlotte has lots of places to eat and listen to music, but upscale places that cater to Black customers are few and far between, he said. One of the things that will set Cloud apart, Boyd said, is its music selection.

This statistic underscores the magnitude of the digital shift that is underway – a move away from traditional, in-house data storage to vast, virtual warehouses in the cloud. ENCORE is Charlotte's top rated venue, catering to live music acts, private special events, and nightclub performances. Cloud Bar checks all the boxes for a safe night out in the year of coronavirus. There’s plenty of space between tables, the waitstaff is properly masked, and you’re outside in the fresh air. Treat yourself to a flashy cocktail and some skyline views. Charlotte’s premier lounge and nightlife experience specializing in exclusive bottle shows as well as serving delicious small bites and great drinks .

This number encapsulates the monumental shift from standalone software installations to subscription-based cloud services. Visited here from out of town, came on a Sunday for brunch. The FOOOD is amazing, the service was lovely my waitress Nish was so sweet and very knowledgeable. Definitely make reservation, we caught it just in time. The bathroom is amazing as well, great with construction. If you’re a fan of food on a stick, order the chilled shrimp and mozzarella skewers ($16), which stand upright on a red wood block.

The Magic House Kids Out and About St Louis

magic house kirkwood

Edwards & Sons, as well as the first president of the St. Louis Stock Exchange and a director of the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Thanks to the efforts of the founders and the contributions of many St. Louis-area individuals, corporations and foundations, The Magic House opened to the public on October 16, 1979. Everything you need to know about the kids' museum's exhibits, special events, and memberships, plus info about its satellite location, MADE for Kids. This included a large wrap-around porch, an expanded lobby and an elevator that allowed the Museum to be accessible to all visitors.

Explore the Museum

The deposit is 20% of the total amount of the contract and the final balance is due in full no less than 14 days prior to your event. Went there with our son and his family to let the grandkids run around. A little pricey when you pay the same price for everyone, one year and older. MADE for Kids is a bit like the Art Studio/Make-It Workshop at The Magic House, supersized, with STEAM activities from digital painting and a well-stocked art/craft studio to pottery wheel, button-making station, and 3D printing projects.

Nature Play

Cultural events, too, like an observance of the Hindu festival of colors, Holi, and a German Easter celebration, draw crowds. Finally, holiday breakfasts and evenings with characters like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are annual traditions. The museum also offers programming for grown-ups including staff development workshops for educators, parent-child classes and special events for grandparents. To house the region’s first interactive children’s museum, they chose a vacant Victorian mansion in suburban Kirkwood, located in the demographic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The house was originally built in 1901 as a private home for the George Lane Edwards family. Mr. Edwards was a managing partner in his family’s brokerage firm, A.G.

Membership Levels

We welcome over 500,000 children, parents, grandparents and caregivers to the museum each year. More than 47,000 students visit The Magic House annually on school field trips. For those unable to come to the museum, The Magic House comes to them, reaching more than 30,000 children every year through outreach programs delivered to schools, libraries, community centers, child-care facilities and hospitals. The Magic House engages all children in hands-on learning experiences that spark imagination, pique curiosity, enhance creativity and develop problem-solving skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic.

In 1997, the Museum underwent a major expansion which added the Children's Village, Math Path, Fitness Center and an Education Wing. In 2001, The Magic House opened Backyard Magic, an outdoor facility featuring a Victorian Education Pavilion, a Children's Sculpture Garden and an outdoor Exhibit Patio. Again in 2008, The Magic House underwent a major expansion as it added a 25,000-square-foot addition nearly doubling the size of the Museum.[5] In 2005, "A Little Bit of Magic" was transformed into the hands on STEM exhibit, WonderWorks. Toddlers enjoy For Baby & Me, an exhibit area inspired by nursery rhymes. Preschoolers love Wonder Works, an area designed especially for younger children to explore the wonders of the world around them. Children ages five to 11 especially like the Children’s Village, a kid-sized community with a market, pet clinic, bank, library, garage and even a fishing pond.
